What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as filler text in design and publishing. It comes from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a philosophical work Cicero wrote in 45 BC, with words cut and altered so it no longer means anything. Printers have used versions of it since at least the 1500s, and it became standard in desktop publishing in the 1980s.
Why designers use placeholder text
When you're designing a page layout, real copy draws attention to what it says. Meaningless text keeps reviewers focused on typography, spacing and structure. Lorem ipsum also has a natural mix of short and long words, so it looks like real text in a way that repeating "text text text" doesn't.
When not to use it
